PROBLEMA 2 MANAGING HARD ROCKââ¬â¢S ROCKFEST At the Hard Rock Cafe, like many organizations, project management is a key planning tool. With Hard Rockââ¬â¢s constant growth in hotels and cafes, remodeling of existing cafes, scheduling for Hard Rock Live concert and event venues, and planning the annual Rockfest, managers rely on project management techniques and software to maintain schedule and budget performance. Without Microsoft Projectâ⬠says Hard Rock Vice-President Chriss Tomasso, ââ¬Å"there is no way to keep so many people on the same page. â⬠Tomasso is in charge of the Rockfest event, which is attended by well over 100,000 enthusiastic fans. The challenge is pulling it off within a tight 9-month planning horizon. As the event approaches, Tomasso devotes greater energy to its activities. For the first 3 months, Tomasso updates his MS Project charts monthly. Then at the 6-month mark, he updates his progress weekly. At the 9-month mark, he checks and corrects his schedule twice a week.Early in the project management process, Tomasso identifies 10 major tasks (called 2 acti vities in a work breakdown structure, or WBS): talent booking, ticketing, marketing/PR, online promotion, television, show production, travel, sponsorships, operations, and merchandising. Using a WBS, each of these is further divided into a series of subtasks. Table 1 identifies 26 of the major activities and subactivities, their immediate predecessors, and time estimates. Tomasso enters all of these into the MS Project software. Tomasso alters the MS Project document and the time line as the project progresses. Itââ¬â¢s okay to change it as long as you keep on track. â⬠he states. The day of the rock concert itself is not the end of the project planning. ââ¬Å"It ââ¬â¢s nothing but surprises. A band not being able to get to the venue because of traffic jams is a surprise, but an ââ¬Ëanticipatedââ¬â¢ surprise. We had an helicopter on stand-by ready to fly the band in,â⬠says Tomasso. On completion of Rockfest in July, Tomasso and his team have a 3-month reprieve before starting the project planning process again. Discussion Questions: 1. Identify the critical path and its activities for Rockfest. How long does the project take? . Which activities have a slack time of 8 weeks or more? 3. Identify five major challenges a project manager faces in events such as this one. 4. Why is a work breakdown structure useful in a project such as this? Take the 26 activities and break them into what you think should be level 2, level 3 and level 4 tasks. TABLE 1 Some of the Major Activities and Subactivities in the Rockfest Plan. Eighteenth Century Literature Essay
At the start of the Eighteenth Century Literature the literary pieces focus on rational and scientific views on all aspects of life be it economic, social, political and religious. The period heralded the Age of Enlightenment which was the thought much prevalent of the day. The writers sought to determine universal principles on humanity, nature, and society. The eighteenth-century literate reflected this quest. Written pieces around this time attacked various spiritual and scientific authority, dogmatism, intolerance, censorship, and economic and social restraints. Thus we can see in Thomas Grayââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Elegy Written in a Country Churchyardâ⬠expressedly deals with the social issues prevalent during their time particularly the wide gap between social class and the opportunity to attain greatness. These lines in the poem captured these views: ââ¬Å"Let not Ambition mock their useful toil, Their homely joys, and destiny obscure; Nor Grandeur hear with a disdainful smile The short and simple annals of the Poor. â⬠Look more:à the importance of being earnest satire Grayââ¬â¢s tone throughout the poem is filled with regret. One can sense that something important is lost. This emotional tone captures the injustices that exist in the society due to wealth. He was actually voicing his opinions clearly against social class prejudices that was apparent during that period. In Jonathan Swiftââ¬â¢s A Modest Proposal also tackled the social ills during his time. This satirical essay used allusions to English oppressive attitudes toward the Irish. This is apparent in these lines ââ¬Å"I grant this food may be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for Landlords, who as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children. â⬠He also pointed out criticisms on England on the way it mistreated Ireland: ââ¬Å"For this kind of commodity will not bear exportation, and flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt, although perhaps I could name a country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it. ââ¬Å" At first glance, the poem appeared to be criticisms heaped on England. But upon closer inspection one can also sense that Swift was expressing his sentiments on the conditions in Ireland, more specifically the can-do spirit of the times that pervaded the community which misled people into thinking that they can cure all social and economic ills specifically fix population and labor issues. Swiftââ¬â¢s Modest Proposal talked about ââ¬Å"a burlesque of projects concerning the poorâ⬠, that were considered fashionable in the early 18th century. Eighteenth Century Literature is characterized by extreme rationalism and skepticism which gave rise to deism or the belief in the existence of God which became the main theme in the succeeding era of Romanticism. This era is considered as the Age of Sensibility which of course clased with the ideals of the Middle Ages. Towards the end of the period, an intensifying focus on instinct and feeling instead of judgment and restraint was noted paving the way for the Romantic Literature. Romantic Literature During the period of Romanticism, industrialization was introduced. Steam engine was developed and this caused expansion of cities and a number of migrants leaving the countryside. Poor people flocked to the city. Issues such as class-conflicts and concerns on environmental pollution were prevalent. This developments in the era prompted the poets and the writers to seek solace in the beauty of nature. Thus, in most of their literary works we can see the universal theme of Mother Nature being the true cause of wisdome and the antidote to industrialization. Philosophers particularly Jean Jacques Rousseau tackled pertinent issues such as the supremacy or dominance of nature over civilization. A group of poets called Lake Poets from England espoused this philosophical view. Lake Poets comprised of a group of friends such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The work of these two poets reflect their sentiments perfectly. These Romantic Poets utilized emotions and reflections in their poets to get their message across. Wordsworthââ¬â¢s `I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud`and Coleridgeââ¬â¢s `The Eolian Harp` reflected their thoughts about nature and how much they value it. ââ¬Å"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloudâ⬠by Wordsworth is about the beauty of nature and the need for introspection. This is best captured in the last lines of the poem: ââ¬Å"For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. â⬠Nature after all is best understood and appreciated in solitude. Solitude here however does not mean loneliness but inner peace or tranquility which is the by-product of being in commune with the natural order. Samuel Taylor Coleridgeââ¬â¢s `The Eolian Harp` also tackles the beauty that nature brings. The Eolian Harp is a stringed instrument which produces music when placed in an open window allowing breeze to pass over it. The eolian harp was often used by poets in the Romantic period to represent creativity. Just like Wordsworthââ¬â¢s poem, it sought to cope with pensiveness and nature as the solution or cure for this pensiveness as apparent in the first lines of the poem: ââ¬Å"My pensive SARA ! thy soft cheek reclined Thus on mine arm, most soothing sweet it is To sit beside our Cot, our Cot oââ¬â¢ergrown With white-flowerââ¬â¢d Jasmin, and the broad-leavââ¬â¢d Myrtleâ⬠Coleridge and Wordsworth, however, have different versions of romanticism. Coleridge wanted to make the paranormal ââ¬Å"realâ⬠or believable. Wordsworthââ¬â¢s idea of romanticism is to stir the imagination of readers using real characters. Victorian Literature During the Victorian Era (1837 ââ¬â 1901), novels and poems were no longer written mainly to please the aristocratic few but to make an impression and cater to the tastes of the much larger middle class. The novels were also getting wider acceptance around this time. In this era, romantic images of the past were extolled. The writers use everyday language and combine it with classical and traditional language to symbolize the ushering of modernity in the Victorian period. At that period, the economy was developing, the nobility was gaining less prominence, and the class structures were vanishing. There is a expressed need for Victorian poets to find a voice that would capture the essence of their time and place. Rudyyard, Kipling ` Danny Deever` attempts to portray the inner turmoils of a man about to be executed. The poem is about military execution parade with Danny Deever. ââ¬Å"What makes you look so white, so white? â⬠said Files-on-Parade. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m dreadinââ¬â¢ what Iââ¬â¢ve got to watchâ⬠, the Colour-Sergeant said. For theyââ¬â¢re hanginââ¬â¢ Danny Deever, you can hear the Dead March play, The regimentââ¬â¢s in ââ¬Ëollow square ââ¬â theyââ¬â¢re hanginââ¬â¢ him to-day; Danny is to be executed by hanging because he killed a fellow soldier while he was asleep. One can sense the concerns of the soldier. Another important poet in the Victorian Era is William Ernest Henley who wrote ââ¬Å"Invictus. â⬠His poems were largely based on his personal reflections of his life and his situation being an amputee who suffered tuberculosis of the bone. ââ¬Å"In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowââ¬â¢d. â⬠The common theme that ran through the poems is about struggles in life. Danny Deever struggled with his work as a soldier and in Invictus, struggles against disease was obvious. Literature in Victorian era is largely characterized as certain, conservative and objective. Writers in this area had learned to live with realities plaguing them be it social, economic and religious. Certainty in both poems come in the form of death and struggles. The views during this literary period were predominantly conservative especially when it came to social perspectives. The upheavals the people experienced during the romantic era had died down in the Victorian era. Much of the poetsââ¬â¢ works around this time served to link and prepared writers as they paved way for the modern era. The literary pieces around this time also tended to reminiscing the past particularly the stories in the classical literature and the medieval literature of England. The Victorians cherised the the heroism, chivalry and nobility of the knights in the past and hoped to recapture that behavior in their period.

Macroeconomics - international trade Term Paper
Macroeconomics - international trade - Term Paper Example The paper will then talk about some protectionism and why should be some government interference in trade. I then talk about how the terms of trade (TOT) of a country are affected by the price of exports and imports and finally the paper ends with an explanation on the impact of exchange rates on a countryââ¬â¢s trade in the international arena. International trade refers to the exchange of goods and services that occurs across international boundaries that is between two or more countries (Grant 452). Countries that are involved in international trade are known as open economies while those that do not engage in it are called autarky or a closed economy. International trade differs from domestic or internal trade that takes place within the country. Restrictions are usually imposed by regulating authorities, international organizations and governments on the imports (foreign goods coming into a country) and exports (local goods supplied abroad). Communication can also be a problem in international trade however due to the advancements in technology and as a result of globalization this problem has been solved to a great extent. There are also high transport costs involved as products often need to be transported from one part of the world to another. In order to buy a foreign good one must have the foreign countryââ¬â¢s currency to buy that good. Although these assumptions are unrealistic however they need to be made in order to understand the two concepts more clearly. A country has an absolute advantage in production of a product when the country can produce more of the product than the other country by using the same amount of resources. In other words producing the same amount if the product by using lesser resources. Let us illustrate this through an example. Suppose that there are only two countries, A and B, in the world producing only two goods, cloth and wheat. They produce per unit of

MARKETING ACROSS CULTURES - Assignment Example If one looks at the culture of the country then it is found that it is a mix of western and Hispanic cultures. Other advantage of the country lies in the fact that it is a stable democracy and the market offers size and diversity that should be very much appreciated. However it is very difficult to find a single distributor or agent that can cover the huge market. Mexico is one of the two largest markets in the Latin America and is a market that is characterised by high growth potential on one hand but a risky economic and political environment. It is also found that the legal system in Mexico is very different from that exists in UK and it is also found that the culture of the country is also very different. It is also found that the external environment of the company plays an important role in the company deciding on the marketing strategy. In order for the company to expand in the Mexican market it is important for the company to develop and try to maintain close relationship with the customers and partners of the business. It is found that the Mexicans in general prefer to receive direct communication in the form of direct telephone calls and face to face meetings. It is also found that the companies in Mexico are extremely conscious of the price and also tend to seek financing activities and also desire exclusive agreements. It is also found that the businesses value service and flexibility. For entry into the market the company can either use equity modes or non equity modes. Equity modes that the company can use to enter into the market will be in the form of Joint ventures, or wholly owned subsidiaries (Peng, Wang, Jiang, 2008). Non equity modes of entry that the company can use will be in the form of exporting to the country and contractual agreements (LÃ ©vesque and Shepherd, 2004). Each of the modes that are said above has unique advantages and disadvantages associated with it (Sakarya, Eckman and Hyllegard,

The Rise of China, its effect on Reshaping the Business Environment Essay
The Rise of China, its effect on Reshaping the Business Environment and how this Affects Multinational Enterprises - Essay Example Disadvantages include increased competition in the export market and increased competition for raw materials. In addition, it is unknown what China will be like as a world economic leader and what effects this will have on the rest of the world. Introduction The economic boom in China has resulted in continued significant growth to the Chinese economy and the growth is predicted to continue. Already China has the second strongest economy worldwide and projections indicate that this growth is likely to continue. Calculations suggest that by 2035 the economy of China will have completely overtaken that of the United States, who is the current economic world leader. As the economy of China continues to grow, there is already evidence of the country reshaping many economic variables and the environment for businesses. There are a large number of implications for businesses as a consequence of this growth particularly those which span multiple countries. A multinational enterprise (MNE) i s a corporation or enterprise that has its headquarters in one country, and operates in other countries also. This operation may be in terms of having distinct branches or stores in other countries, or it may mean outsourcing production or a portion of production to a different country. MNEââ¬â¢s vary significantly in size, with some being small, and others large, with budgets that are so large they exceed the gross domestic products of some countries. The countries in which MNEââ¬â¢s have their headquarters play an important role in the way in which they operate and their ability to generate revenue, however the international economic situation also plays a significant role. The rise of China has already significant affected economic relationships and trends internationally and there are strong indications that this trend will continue. As a consequence, the rise of China has many potential effects for MNEs including both positive and negative effects. The Economic Rise of Ch ina The financial crisis which has been affecting enterprises, governments and countries worldwide has provided significant opportunity for the economy of China to strengthen itself and emerge as one of the fastest developing economies worldwide. The economic boom that has caused this rise has been steady for four decades, and indications suggest that the rise is sustainable. Already it ranks as the second strongest worldwide economy, after that of the United States. It is the largest exporter of products worldwide, and the second largest importer of goods. It has been projected that the economy of China will be stronger than that of the US by 2035, and will be twice the size of the US economy by 2050 . The growth of Chinaââ¬â¢s economy has always been independent of the US, having low growth when the US economy was soaring, and now growing rapidly as the US economy is having significant difficulties. As China is gaining economic strength and power internationally, the consequenc e is a shifting of economic power and the redistribution of economic linkages as well as the creation of new ones. The continued growth and development of Chinaââ¬â¢s economy will eventually result in the displacement of the US as the predominant market economically, resulting reassessment and changes within all major economic markets worldwide. Before the financial crisis, China used an export model for its economy, exporting goods to

The Global Environment of Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
The Global Environment of Business - Essay Example With this concern, the brand adopted an important decision concerning setting higher prices for its broad array of products particularly in the European region in comparison with the US owing to the reason that the choices along with the preferences of the customers are quite dissimilar in the two business markets by a greater extent. In this similar context, one of the crucial factors that lead towards higher prices of lifestyle brands in Europe as compared to the US can be identified as the expensive operational costs. This can be justified with reference to the fact that Europe based customers are more trendy in nature than the US wherein Hilfiger had to raise its operational costs in order to comply with the requirements of the trendy European customers. Apart from the factor concerning higher operational costs, the other critical aspect which led to higher prices of Hilfiger products in Europe can be identified as the concentration of the retail market. In addition, the nature a s well as the preferences of the European customers can also be regarded as the other critical factors that led towards higher prices in the European region than compared to the US. ... rucial factors that led to higher prices in Europe as compared to the US, it can be affirmed that Hilfiger might experience certain major problems especially in Europe. In this similar background, one of the vital problems that Hilfiger might face is attracting along with retaining the customers from its targeted market segment, buying its different collection of products or brands. Furthermore, the other major problem that Hilfiger might encounter from having higher prices in the European region is decreased profitability along with productivity resulting in hindered customer satisfaction and lower retention rates over the long run period. This in turn might also hamper the growth of the company in terms of its market shares within the European region by a substantial extent and restrict its future growth prospects. To be mentioned in this context, the other problem that might be encountered by Hilfiger owing to its higher prices in Europe as compared to the US, is the inability to compete with its major rivalries and thereby accomplishing superior competitive position over its chief business market competitors in terms of weakening strategy in the area of brand positioning (Gitman & McDaniel, 2008). Question 2 It has been apparently observed that Hilfiger had to experience different national preferences while performing its operational functions in several nations throughout the globe applying a widely diversified strategic process. In order to effectively deal with various national preferences and facilitate the brand towards betterment, especially in the US, the CEO of the brand intended to adopt and follow the strategy of harmonising its European and the US collections focusing on increasing market share and customer satisfaction (Uclan, 2013). Reflection on Coatess Argument Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Reflection on Coatess Argument - Essay Example The black people were denied the opportunity to access good housing facilities since they were cut out of the legitimate home-mortgage market starting from the 1930s to 1960s.I also believe that previous efforts by the subsequent government to improve the living standards of Black Americans through welfare programs, affirmative action and subsidized housing have been minimal. In my view, although the current Constitution grants equal protection of the law, racism and discrimination against Blacks still exist and thus only reparations can address these social problems. Although the author argues that reparations may be expensive given the huge spending by the government on other social programs that benefit the entire American population, I differ since a debt to Black people is owed and American has the resources to pay the reparations.Ã The black people deserve reparations since the available statistics indicate that they are at the wrong end of all the socio-economic indicators. For instance, blacks are three times likely to encounter homicide than other racial groups while the infant mortality rate of black neighbourhoods is twice that of the national average. Although the current Black people might not have been slaves, the truth is that they were denied their inheritance and good upbringing since their parents were poor and mistreated by the government. There is a prove that slavery is responsible for Black Americans socio-economic status due to discrimination, lack of property rights and lack of voting rights.

Kitchen design Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Kitchen design - Essay Example There are some types of kitchens, such as, contemporary style kitchens, in which a small dining table is placed inside a kitchen. All of these functions need special attention when designing a new kitchen for a house. In this paper, we will discuss some of the major kitchen designs in order to get an understanding of the advantages, disadvantages, uses, and other points related to them. ââ¬Å"There are as many kitchen design styles today as there are kitchens, since designs may be eclectic or highly customized by combining different looksâ⬠(Cyprus n.d.). Some of the major kitchen designs include one-way gallery, two-way gallery, L-style, and U-style. All of these kitchens are different in their designs and appearance. The area covered by each of the kitchen designs also vary from each style to another style. Let us discuss all of these designs of kitchens in some detail. A one-way kitchen is usually the smallest of all kitchens as far as area is concerned. However, it serves all of the three major functions of a kitchen, which include preparation, cooking, and storage. One of the main features of this kitchen design is that the major functions are set to function along a single wall. No other wall of the kitchen serves main functions of a kitchen. For example, the refrigerator, the stove or oven, and the sink are all placed at one side of the kitchen. There are usually some cabinets that are placed at the upper side of the wall. This is a good arrangement of a kitchenââ¬â¢s major functions if the area is small and one likes to have a beautiful kitchen even in that small area. Such kitchens are ideal for condominiums and small apartments where there is short space and minimal cooking. Even in single-family homes, such kitchens serve well for the residents. A two-way kitchen is usually bigger in area as compared to one-way kitchens. One of the main features of this kitchen design is that two walls perform the main functions of the kitchen. The

Church to Connect Essay Example for Free
Church to Connect Essay ââ¬Å"Our future is not to be found in our preservation but in our investmentâ⬠(19). ââ¬Å"The best way to predict the future is to create itâ⬠(20). ââ¬Å"Fewer people are attending church because of the diminishing influence of Christ on the church itself. â⬠ââ¬Å"We equated being a good citizen with being a good Christian. We lived without persecution and soon found ourselves without conviction. We didnââ¬â¢t lose America; we gave her away! In our panic and powerlessness we turned to political means to seek to regain what we once had through spiritual awakening . Yet as a moral majority we could not accomplish what God could through Gideonââ¬â¢s fewâ⬠(28). ââ¬Å"Once we were called Christians by an unbelieving world and now we call ourselves Christians and the world calls us hypocrites. Is it possible that it wasnââ¬â¢t the nation that was becoming dangerously secular but the church? We were neither relevant nor transcendent. We have become, in the worst of ways, religious. We are the founders of the secular nationâ⬠(29). ââ¬Å"The church became a refuge from the world rather than a force in the world. Predictability and stability became dominant themesâ⬠¦. The gospel shifted from a church on a mission to a church that supported missionsâ⬠(30). ââ¬Å"How could we ever think that the Christian faith would be safe when its central metaphor is an instrument of death? It is not a coincidence that baptism is a water grave depicting death and resurrection. It is no less significant that the ongoing ordinance of the Lordââ¬â¢s Supper is a reminder of sacrifice. How did we ever develop a safe theology from such a dangerous faith? â⬠(33) ââ¬Å"Institutions preserve culture while movements create cultureâ⬠(34). ââ¬Å"For years the bulk of American Christians who were committed to missions could only participate through giving and praying. Today, the call to crosscultural ministry doesnââ¬â¢t even require going; it just requires staying with a purposeâ⬠(45). ââ¬Å"Where once the pagan lived in the country and the danger of the city was to be Christianized; now Christians tend to live away from the cities and view the urban dweller as the true paganâ⬠(46). ââ¬Å"Gideon was focused on mass; God was focused on momentumâ⬠(69). ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s hard to believe that a movement born of visionaries and dreamers would become dominantly known for its traditions and ritualsâ⬠(138). ââ¬Å"Just because a person cannot read doesnââ¬â¢t mean she lacks the capacity to learn. Oneââ¬â¢s present condition is not an indication of potential, but of developmentâ⬠(211). III. SALIENT POINTS/ANALYSIS 1. The Need for the Church to Connect with this Generation The author speaks about how in the past 40 years communities have changed dramatically yet many local churches have stayed the same. This explains the irrelevancy and bankruptcy of the church in regards to being salt and light and functioning as agents of change for culture. Even the way the gospel is communicated has to be changed if we are going to reach this present generation. One of the dramatic changes in our environment is the shift from words to images. To do church in a way that is entirely textdriven is the kiss of death. People donââ¬â¢t read, they simply observe. Beyond the emergence of a postliterate society, we have a culture raised on entertainment (17). As McManus states, ââ¬Å"While not many churches perform their services in Latin today, our language, style, music, and methods are pretty much Latin to the unchurched populationâ⬠(81).

Click Film Review Essay Example for Free
Click Film Review Essay Click film review What if you had a universal remote control that remote controlled your universe? Click follows the story of Michael Newman (Adam Sandler), an architect whose long hours and unkind boss (David Hasslehoff) have driven him to a near breakdown. Whist watching TV, he longs for a universal remote to control everything and he finds exactly that in department store ââ¬Ëbed, bath and beyondââ¬â¢. He soon realises that ââ¬Ëeverythingââ¬â¢ is not as it seems as he mutes a barking dog and pauses his wife in mid sentence. When Michael realises can do anything he wants, he fast-forwards an entire argument with his wife and skips a scene to his all-important promotion. But the remote soon becomes damaged by all this fast-forwarding and starts to skip Michael through his life. However I longed for a similar remote to skip to the end of the film! The truth is click canââ¬â¢t decide whether itââ¬â¢s a sentimental tale or a string of hilarious gags. The film certainly is sentimental, but most of the jokes arenââ¬â¢t very funny. For example when a female jogger runs by and Michael uses slow-mo. Or the time when Michael pauses his boss to fart in his face. The film tends to drag on and can get quite boring at times. However, if you look beyond the bad jokes you will find some decent comedy but unfortunately bad jokes are the majority. Comedy aside though, Click will have you in tears. I canââ¬â¢t reveal any more about the plot but I can tell you jokes or no jokes, you will be crying by the end. The film carries a very important message: family comes first. I feel there was no clear line between comedy and sentimentality and for this reason I did not enjoy the film and would rate it 6/10. Sam Marroncelli 7EY

The Structure and Function of Cells
The Structure and Function of Cells EUKARYOTIC CELL DESCRIPTION/FUNCTION: A. CELL MEMBRANE AND THE FUNCTIONS: CELL MEMBRANE Also called the plasma membrane gives mechanical strength to the cell. Its unique structure enables itself to serve as molecular traffic regulator. It is 5 up to 10 um in thickness. It also exhibits fluid mosaic nature, seal itsef if broken. B. THE CYTOPLASM AND ITS ORGANELLES CYTOPLASM A mass of jelly-like material that is somewhat grayish or colorless, translucent and viscous It can change from semi solid to semi liquid. C. CELL ORGANELLES ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER) is the transport network for molecules targeted for certain modifications and specific destinations, as compared to molecules that will float freely in the cytoplasm. ER has two forms: the rough ER and the smooth ER. RIBOSOMES The ribosome is a large complex composed of many molecules, including RNAs and proteins, and is responsible for processing the genetic instructions carried by an mRNA. Ribosomes float freely in the cytoplasm or sometimes bind to another organelle called the endoplasmic reticulum MITOCHONDRIA are self-replicating organelles that occur in various numbers, shapes, and sizes in the cytoplasm of all eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria have two functionally distinct membrane systems separated by a space: the outer membrane, which surrounds the whole organelle; and the inner membrane, which is thrown into folds or shelves that project inward. These inward folds are called cristae. Mitochondria play a critical role in generating energy in the eukaryotic cell, and this process involves a number of complex pathways GOLGI BODIES OR GOLGI APPARATUS (also called the golgi apparatus or golgi complex) a flattened, layered, sac-like organelle that looks like a stack of pancakes and is located near the nucleus. The golgi body packages proteins and carbohydrates into membrane-bound vesicles for export from the cell. LYSOSOMES are often referred to as the garbage disposal system of a cell. digest foreign bacteria that invade a cell. helping to recycle receptor proteins and other membrane components and degrading worn out organelles such as mitochondria. Lysosomes can even help repair damage to the plasma membrane by serving as a membrane patch, sealing the wound. MICROBODIES Variety of organelles similar to lysosome but contains different enzymes. One of these is the glyxoxysomes present in some plant, another is peroxisomes which contain powerful oxidative enzymes. CYTOSKELETON Microtubules that provide support to the internal system of cell thus, it provides support and shape. Also provides pathways for certain cellular molecules to move. VACUOLES Membrane- bound, fluid- filled spaces found in both animal and plant cell but bigger in plant cell. The vacuolar membrane is also called tonoplast and they contain liquid cell sap. MICROFILAMENTS Are long thread like extremely thin filaments first seen in skeletal muscle cells that gives the cell a striped appearance. CENTRIOLES Small dark bodies located just outside the nucleus of most animal cells. They are cylindrical structures and two of them lie close together. Associated in the spindle fibers of dividing animal cells. PLASTIDS Are cytoplasmic orhanelles found in cells of most plants. NUCLEUS It houses the cells chromosomes and is the place where almost all DNA replication and RNA synthesis occur. The nucleus is spheroid in shape and separated from the cytoplasm by a membrane called the nuclear envelope. CELL WALL a thick, rigid membrane that surrounds a plant cell. This layer of cellulose fiber gives the cell most of its support and structure. cell wall also bonds with other cell walls to form the structure of the plant. CHLOROPLASTS are similar to mitochondria but are found only in plants. Chloroplasts convert light energy from the sun into ATP through a process called photosynthesis. CENTROSOME (also called the microtubule organizing center) a small body located near the nucleus it has a dense center and radiating tubules. The centrosomes is where microtubules are made. During cell division (mitosis), the centrosome divides and the two parts move to opposite sides of the dividing cell. GRANUM (plural grana) A stack of thylakoid disks within the chloroplast is called a granum. NUCLEOLUS an organelle within the nucleus it is where ribosomal RNA is produced. NUCLEOID a nuclear region where the chromosomal matter is found. DNA in the bacterial cell is generally confined to this central region. Though it isnt bounded by a membrane, it is visibly distinct from the rest of the cell interior. Prokaryotic cells genome usually consists of a single, large, circular DNA molecule 2. RIBOSOMES give the cytoplasm of bacteria a granular appearance in electron micrographs. Though smaller than the ribosomes in eukaryotic cells, these inclusions have a similar function in translating the genetic message in messenger RNA into the production of peptide sequences. 3. VESICLES relatively small and enclosed compartments, separated from the cytosol by at least one lipid bilayer. If they have only one lipid bilayer, they are called unilamellar vesicles; otherwise they are called multilamellar. 4. CAPSULE a layer of polysaccharide (sometimes proteins) that protects the bacterial cell and is often associated with pathogenic bacteria because it serves as a barrier against phagocytosis by white blood cells. 5. CELL WALL is composed of peptidoglycan (polysaccharides + protein), the cell wall maintains the overall shape of a bacterial cell. The three primary shapes in bacteria are coccus (spherical), bacillus (rod-shaped) and spirillum (spiral). Mycoplasma are bacteria that have no cell wall and therefore have no definite shape. 6. PLASMA MEMBRANE is a lipid bilayer much like the cytoplasmic (plasma) membrane of other cells. There are numerous proteins moving within or upon this layer that are primarily responsible for transport of ions, nutrients and waste across the membrane. 7. PILI are hollow, hairlike structures made of protein allow bacteria to attach to other cells. A specialized pilus, the sex pilus, allows the transfer from one bacterial cell to another. Pili (sing., pilus) are also called fimbriae (sing., fimbria). 8. FLAGELLA The purpose of flagella (sing., flagellum) is motility. Flagella are long appendages which rotate by means of a motor located just under the cytoplasmic membrane. Creating a Voice in Poetry :: Reports Poetry Poems Literature Essays
Creating a Voice in Poetry Discuss how the poets create voices in their work. Write about Reports and one other poem. The poem 'Reports' focuses on one teachers cynical approach on writing school reports. This didactic poem take full advantage of using the imperative and pragmatics, as well as manipulating graphological features, such as the use of italics to indicate quotations. The poem is also written as a monologue, showing one side of a conversation, allowing the reader to focus on the opinions and character of an individual... in this case the school teacher. Similarly, this method is used in Carol Ann Duffy's poem 'Head of English', taken from 'Standing Female Nude.' The poem 'Head of English' makes good use of written language, creating the tone of a pompous school teacher but also uses punctuation to give the reader an idea about the character portrayed. 'Head of English' shows one characters disdain for another, however the reader is only meant to visualise the seemingly over confident Head of English. Duffy uses a monologue style to allow the reader to engage with the teacher in question and allows the reader to empathise (although not sympathise) with the voice in the poem. The poem opens with the line; "Today we have a poet in the class." On a surface read through this opening line could be intended to enthuse the pupils, however in my opinion this remark shows subtle hints of sarcasm, however unintentional or subconscious these may be. Grammatically the sentence structure suggests that the teacher is to the point, there is no indication of a break between "Today" and "we" although, the reader would expect a teacher to be taking her time and would at least expect to see a comma. As well as this the full stop at the end of the line adds emphasis to the sentence and brings it to an abrupt end, almost definitely a purposeful move on the part of the poet, to suggest to the reader that the character in the poem is abrupt. The hints of sarcasm are then backed up between lines three and five, when the teacher says; " Perhaps we're going to witness verse hot from the press. Who knows." The first sentence suggests that the teacher is testing the poet. On the surface it seems as if she is trying to enthuse the pupils, although the pragmatics suggest that she is testing the poet, almost challenging the poet. Then the second sentence, "Who knows.", backs up the readers thoughts of the teacher. Intriguingly the poet has manipulated the language again by using a full stop to end a sentence that would normally be a question.

Egyptian Tombs :: World History Essays
Egyptian Tombs Egyptologists had lost interest in the site of tomb 5, which had been explored and looted decades ago. Therefore, they wanted to give way to a parking lot. However, no one would have ever known the treasure that lay only 200 ft. from King Tut's resting place which was beyond a few rubble strewn rooms that previous excavators had used to hold their debris. Dr. Kent Weeks, an Egyptologist with the American University in Cairo, wanted to be sure the new parking facility wouldn't destroy anything important. Thus, Dr. weeks embarked in 1988 on one final exploration of the old dumping ground. Eventually he was able to pry open a door blocked for thousands of years, and announced the discovery of a life time. "We found ourselves in a corridor," he remembers. "On each side were 10 doors and at end there was a statue of Osiris, the god of the afterlife." The tomb is mostly unexcavated and the chambers are choked with debris, Weeks is convinced that there are more rooms on a lower level, bringing the total number to more than 100. That would make tomb 5 the biggest and most complex tomb ever found in Egypt, and quite conceivable the resting place of up to 50 sons of Ramesses II, perhaps the best known of all the pharaohs, the ruler believed to have been Moses' nemesis in the book of Exodus. The Valley of the Kings, in which Tomb 5 is located, is just across the Nile River from Luxor, Egypt. It is never exactly been off the beaten track. Tourism has been brisk in the valley for millenniums: graffiti scrawled on tomb walls proves that Greek and Roman travelers stopped here to gaze at the wall paintings and hieroglyphics that were already old long before the birth of Christ. Archaeologists have been coming for centuries too. Napoleon brought his own team of excavators when he invaded in 1798, and a series of expeditions in 19th and early 20th centuries uncovered one tomb after another. A total of 61 burial spots had been found by the time the British explorer Howard Carter opened the treasure-laden tomb of King Tutankhamun in 1922. Britain's James Burton had burrowed into the site of Tomb 5 in 1820, and decided that there was nothing inside. A dismissive Carter used its entryway as a place to dump the debris he was hauling out of Tut's tomb. In the late 1980s, came the proposed parking area and Weeks' concern. His 1988 foray made it clear that the tomb wasn't dull as Burton said. Elaborate carvings covered walls and referred to Ramesses II, whose
